Annabelle
We lost lovely Annabelle in some kind of freakish event, November 16, 2009, just two days before she was scheduled to go to the vet. We don't know what happened, but we found her lying still in the yard just minutes after she'd gone outside with some of the other dogs. More than anything, I'll miss her sleeping on my pillow, and running around with her squeaky toy, which she loved. I thought she'd found a home as well that prior weekend, but it was not to be. Too bad. There are so many ifs thens, but I cannot dwell. I can only know that she is romping and playing with our other lost loves: Venti, Vaughn, Axle, and the others we could not save. Play hard, and know that I loved you immensely. Your foster mom, Carol

Axle
Little Axle came from the same home as Jade, but ended up together at the city shelter. When we dropped by the shelter to take some of the dogs there, we couldn't leave either behind. As a pittie mix, we always fear that such sweet dogs will go to the wrong place and for the wrong reason. But we know that dogs are bad because they have bad owners. Good owners have good dogs. And this little fellow is a blank slate, ready to learn his sit (which he's picking up quickly), stay, down, come. Axle is a typical puppy: exuberant, bouncy, all about life. At first he seemed rather dominant, but once he arrived in his foster home, he's been duly respectful of all the adult dogs and the people he meets. He's confident and ready to march into the great world out there, to experience all there is. Axle will be going into the clinic before adoption to be neutered, microchipped, and get booster vaccinations. If you are one of those great people devoted to dispelling breed-related myths, then Buffalo Humane applauds you. Great dogs are made, and it starts with a fabulous pup ready to soak up everything you have to teach. It's time to stop the killing of homeless pitties and show the world how wonderful they can be! =================== Unfortunately, Axle just passed away curled up next to me. Parvo is such an insidious disease, and pittie puppies are some of the hardest hit by it. I just wanted to take a moment to tell you what a wonderful puppy he was. Happy and full of life. Friendly and warm. At least he had some happy moments, romping through fresh hay, lying on a human lap, and sleeping curled on a pillow. We at least gave him that. Please play with all our friends on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, little one. We'll miss you, but none so much as your foster mom and dad. No regrets, none at all Carol RIP Axle 4:15am, Sunday, August 16, 2009

Arya Rose (aka Sheila Cutie)
Little Arya Rose was one of the "four cuties" whom we rescued from South Carolina. We found a great home for Arya Rose, with the Arnold family. We were sad to hear that just one year later, Arya seemed to be having a problem with her eye, then she began vomiting, and unfortunately she died a few days later at the veterinary emergency clinic. The family is devastated and so are we. They still can't even look at Arya's play toys. "She was just the best dog ever. There will never be another like her." Yes, we know. She was a very special girl. But she has lots of friends on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, and Buffalo Humane friends and volunteers regularly keep them in our thoughts.

Louie (aka Free)
Hi all, With great sadness I have to let everyone know that we lost one of the pups from Ontario this morning. His foster mom woke up to find him choking and grasping to breath. She immediately took him to Orchard Park emergency vet this morning. She almost lost him several times during the drive there, but at some point he was able to start breathing a bit better. While at the clinic they found food lodged in his throat and were able to remove it. He did however, have some major damage to his lungs and went into respiratory and cardiac arrest. They did CPR but the damage to his heart and lungs was too great and he passed away at 9:30 this morning. What we do makes such an impact on these animals lives, but we do occasionally lose some through no fault of our own. Rescue is usually joyful, but can be very heartbreaking at times. The foster mom was amazing this morning as she rushed the pup to the vet leaving her coat and her shoes behind to save this little life. Please send healing vibes to her and her family as they mourn. Clara

Frankie
This is Frankie about a year ago. He came from an area that routinely euthanized dogs because they end up in county dog pounds that keep them for three days and then kill them. Frankie was lucky, he found us and he found his forever home with Nikki - who loved him, cared for him and cherished him. Frankie was rushed to the emergency vet where he had emergency surgery to remove a blockage. Even though his mom did everything she could, he passed away the day after that surgery. Frankie, you are sorely missed by us all, but especially by Donna, your foster mom and Nikki, your forever mom.
